How to Pronounce Irregular Verbs (Grouped by Sound)
Do you sometimes struggle with the pronunciation of irregular verbs?
You might know the spelling, but when you try to say it out loud, it just doesn’t stick.
Irregular verbs are much easier to remember when you group them by sound instead of memorizing them one by one. Your mouth learns patterns. So that’s what we’re going to do today!
Group 1: The /ɛ/ sound (as in red)
These verbs shift to an /ɛ/ vowel in the past simple and past participle:
Say → said → said
Read → read → read (spelling stays the same, sound changes!)
Lead → led → led
Feed → fed → fed
Meet → met → met
Group 2: The /ɔ/ or /ɑ/ sound
Usually associated with the -OUGHT spelling pattern:
Buy → bought → bought
Think → thought → thought
Catch → caught → caught
Teach → taught → taught
Bring → brought → brought
Group 3: The /ʌ/ sound
Come → came → come
Run → ran → run
Become → became → become
Begin → began → begun
Drink → drank → drunk
Group 4: The /ən/ ending
Get → got → gotten
Eat → ate → eaten
Write → wrote → written
Speak → spoke → spoken
Take → took → taken
Group 5: The /oʊn/ ending
Know → knew → known
Grow → grew → grown
Throw → threw → thrown
Blow → blew → blown
