This week we’re going to talk about how to pronounce New York as well as its five boroughs.

  • New York: nuw-york [IPA: nu: jɔ:rk]
  • Manhattan: m’n-HA-t’n [IPA: mənˈhætən] or m’n-HA-ʔ’n [IPA: mənˈhæʔən]
  • Queens: kweenz [IPA: kwiːnz]
  • Brooklyn: bruk-lin [IPA: ˈbrʊklɪn]
  • The Bronx: thuh-braanks [IPA: ðə brɑːŋks]
  • Staten Island: sta-t’n-ai-l’nd [IPA: ˈstætən aɪlənd] or sta-ʔ’n-ai-l’nd [IPA: ˈstæʔən aɪlənd]
