151. How to Pronounce ‘Restaurant’ | Transcript

Today I wanna give you a quick tip on how to clearly pronounce the word ‘restaurant’.

Restaurant. So, I hear a bunch of different pronunciations of this specific word, so let’s clarify what’s the best way to go about it. So, you can pronounce it both ways. You can pronounce it as restaurant with three syllables, but I like the two-syllable pronunciation, restaurant.

So, let’s begin with the first syllable. Rest, rest, as in the rest of them. So, we begin with an R, so round your lips and pull the tongue up for the R. You can hold it out to make sure that you’re pronouncing the R correctly. And then open your mouth to an eh sound. Reh, reh. Then the tongue goes up for an S. Res, and is abruptly stopped by the T. Rest, rest. Okay? Do you hear it?Actually, you’re not supposed to hear it. ‘Cause there is no T here, it’s not rest. It’s rest, okay? I’m blocking the air with my tongue abruptly, and that is the T, that’s what is perceived as the T. Rest.

And then you round your lips again and lift the tongue up for another R. Restran. And then again, we have an N sound. So, lift the tongue up for the N. Restauran. And then you stop it immediately with another T. Rant, rant. Listen to the difference between just an N and an N that is stopped with the T sound. Restauran. Restaurant. Rant, okay?

So, you kinda like, block it here in your nose or in your mouth. Rant, okay? Restaurant. It’s a great restaurant. I’m at a restaurant right now. Restaurant.

All right, that’s it.
