How to Pronounce ‘Mountain’: Pronunciation Video Tutorial

There are several ways to pronounce the word ‘mountain’. In this post I’ll share with you two common ways to pronounce it and you can choose the one that is easier for you. In both cases, the stress is on the first syllable.

  1. mawn-tn [IPA:ˈmæʊn.tn̩]
Start with the M sound and shift to ‘aw’ as in ‘cow’. To make the ‘aw’ sound, start with the ‘a’ as in ‘cat’ and transition to /ʊ/ as in ‘pull’. Then, add the N sound.
When you get to the second syllable, keep your tongue glued to the upper palate and release a T sound through your nose and move right away to an N sound.
  2. mawn-n [IPA: ˈmæʊn.n̩]
Start with the M sound and shift to ‘aw’ as in ‘cow’. To make the ‘aw’ sound, start with the ‘a’ as in ‘cat’ and transition to /ʊ/ as in ‘pull’. Then, add the N sound.
When you get to the second syllable, make a glottal stop sound and then add an N sound. You can just add an N sound for that effect.
